From the Bride: With my groom, our families, and wedding party scattered across the globe and away from me, I knew planning our wedding in less than seven months was going to be a logistical challenge, to say the least. At the time, I lived in Washington, DC and Justin was based in San Diego, travelling often for military training. Since neither of us had  long-term connections to the places we lived, we decided to marry in my hometown of Rochester, where my parents were eager to help with wedding plans. Justin and I only got to see each other a few times before the big day, so most of our wedding decisions and even our premarital  counseling occurred over phone calls, e-mails, and Skype. We left many  of our “on the ground” decisions to my mom, who did a fantastic job choosing our Rochester vendors.

On our wedding day, the thermometer read 100 degrees and rising.  As I got ready and imagined Justin climbing into his woolen Marine Corps dress blues, I thanked God we chose air-conditioned venues. Our ceremony was held at Rochester  Covenant Church, where I had attended youth group activities. Our officiant helped us design a wedding ceremony that reflected our devotion to one another, our gratefulness for God’s unending grace, and our desire to have our marriage be a ministry to others. We were blessed to have friends, wedding party members, and my family lead us in worship on guitars, piano, jimbe, violins, and vocals.

Since our guests didn’t all know each of us well, we tried to inject as much of “us” into our reception as possible. Guests sat at tables named and decorated with photos of places we had lived or travelled together. The flower arrangements had kiwis in them as a nod to my father’s nickname for me. We entered the reception to the Star Wars “Throne Room” music from our favorite movie series. In accordance with Marine Corps tradition, we cut our wedding cake with Justin’s officer sword. Instead  of a traditional wedding favor, we made a donation to a Christian organization that provides spiritual and emotional support to military couples affected by the scars of war. I love to dance, so my dad, Justin and I took ballroom dance lessons to make the first dance and Daddy-Daughter dance memorable and fun.

There were many aspects of our wedding I loved, but the toasts were especially meaningful.  Listening to my father’s toast, I remember scanning the room and being amazed and overwhelmed with gratitude for the love emanating from the faces of our dear friends and family. We will forever remember our  wedding with thankfulness—having been blessed to celebrate with so many wonderful people.

From the Bride: Michael and I were married on Saturday, September 8th, 2012 at Somerby Golf Club.  It was the first beautiful fall day and we couldn’t have had better weather.  Fall is one of the most beautiful times of year for Minnesota, as well as our favorite time of year.  In planning for our big day, we decided to go with a vintage romantic theme.  I loved certain fall colors, but thought it was too cliché to follow the fall theme to the tee (red, orange, brown, pumpkins, leaves, etc.).

Our families have some close ties with the game of golf, so we decided to have our ceremony outdoors at the most beautiful course we could think of, Somerby Golf Club.  Ties so close, in fact, that the wedding party was almost hit with a golf ball during the ceremony.  The fact that someone screamed “fore!” and no one was hurt makes for a fun memory of that day.

Personally, the ceremony itself was my (Megan’s) favorite part of the entire day.  As a bride, I think there is so much hype about being able to relax and be in the moment during your wedding ceremony.  I had heard so much advice about “taking it all in” and “attempting to really be in the moment with your future husband” (or bride) during that anxiety-provoking milestone moment of your life and I must have taken those pieces of advice deep into my heart.  I had never felt this at peace in my life.  It seemed as though no one else was there except for the celebrant, Michael, and I.  I give credit of this relaxed, peaceful, “in the moment” feeling to my on point stress relieving vendors, my helpful friends and family, and the fact that I have wanted to marry this man in front of me since high school.  The ceremony ended right as clouds began to roll in.

Following the ceremony, a shuttle from a family business (Mickey’s Irish Saloon), took the wedding party to various “hot spots” in downtown Rochester.  After some preliminary celebrating, we arrived to our reception at the Double Tree-Hilton in downtown Rochester.  After the grand march and the cutting of the Tuxedo cake, we were served a choice of herb roasted chicken or a butternut squash ravioli dish.  The amazingly delicious food was followed by some phenomenal speeches from the father of the bride, the maid of honor, the best man, and the sister of the groom.  The whole room was filled with love and happiness from the friendly faces, to the vintage lanterns and windows, to the romantic blood red uplighting. The night ended with a jam packed dance floor and dance moves no one has ever seen.

Real Wedding Wednesday: Byron Wedding from Studio KH

19 Dec

This radiant bride’s smiles light up a room.  The color palette of vibrant purple and green hues matches her infectious smile and cheerful personality.  That gorgeous wedding dress with a sweetheart neckline and ruffles looks amazing on this elegant bride.  And I love their unique, textural bouquets and how the bridesmaids’ bouquets each feature a different flower yet coordinate perfectly.  Their passionate photographer, Kimberly Halverson of Studio KH, did fabulous work scouting out lovely outdoor backdrops at the beautiful Somerby Golf Club and capturing the smiles and details of Cam and Mark’s day.
